Danny, Carlos, Frank and summer help


The following quote is from Sam Ewing, a former baseball player, who knows how hard work shapes a person:
 “Hard work spotlights the character of people: Some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.”

Well our janitors showed up this summer! Hats off to you, janitors - you did the heavy lifting of fixing broken “stuff”, moving big and little pieces, relocating entire sections, disinfecting what needs to be disinfected, dusting high and low places, putting a gleaming “spit shine” on almost every inch of the building! 

And, even though we weren’t here to notice - we are noticing and appreciating all of it now. Teachers are commenting on how their classrooms are put back together – with furniture in desired spots!  Crew, do you know how much a teacher values just that?  Teachers have to create displays, plan lessons, organize materials and more; they value all that you do in terms of getting the physical classroom ready as that frees them to do the important preparation for teaching.  I hear that sentiment very often, janitor crew! 

This summer and all school year, you are a key to the smooth running of Irving, to our safety, to our school image.

Circling back to the sentiment behind Sam Ewing’s quote – Danny and crew, your character makes you “turn up your sleeves”.  Thank you for always showing up and doing just that.

Valentines Day

Carpe diem!  Happy Valentine’s Day!   Kids – and boyfriends and girlfriends– and adults who have special relationships with kids - that would be grandparents, for sure, want to show some expression of their love.   We send our cards with hearts and Xs and Os – and many of us spend a few minutes reading the sentiment inside the card – the thought needs to be a good fit.  Why not take the time to compose our own message to our Valentine?   I have been reading a fair amount about using mentor texts to teach the craft of writing.  Lucy Calkins and Katie Woodray (Wondrous Words) continually advise us to really get to know several good books – like inside and out.  What are the “tricks” of their writing?   What are the craft elements the author weaves into the writing? Student Growth

It is hard to believe that we are now into our 3rd year of PERA/Student Growth.  When I think back to the beginning of this initiative, I remember the apprehension around not only the Type III assessments, but the reality that these assessments were going to be linked to teacher evaluation. Now in year 3, PERA seems like second nature.  In the beginning of the year, I held an evaluation meeting for meeting for the staff who would be evaluated this school year and, at that meeting, I suggested that we should focus on formulating meaningful Type III assessments.  I get that it’s easy to pull out last year’s assessment and use it this year, but unless the assessment reflects current classroom instruction, then we are just going through the motions for the sake of compliance.
