Nurse Julie

An elementary school is full of caretakers – after all, we are responding to needs of the youngest in our society – and, in the case of Irving – hundreds of bright eyed, diverse youngsters under one roof.  And, school nurses are in a special category of school caretakers. 

Julie, our nurse, you are an invaluable presence in the midst of Irving.  We often take all you do for granted because you are so darn good at doing it.  You give – give non-stop each minute of the school day. 

  • You apply countless BandAids because you know that a BandAid is a little strip of reassurance that a scrap will heal and get the student back to class. You delve into your stash of crackers to feed the weak, hungry stomachs who didn’t eat in the morning. 
  • You care and track kids who need insulin, inhalers, Epi pens, and prescribed drug medications. 
  • You are calm under pressure paying attention to the smallest details and changes with our kids who have the most serious health conditions.
  • You respond to concerned parents promptly, and you reach out to concerned parents always.
  • You are the eyes of public health – detecting pink eye and lice and stopping their spread. 
  • You plan and execute vision screenings flawlessly.  After hours of planning and communication, last week you organized a free dental exam for 108 students! 
  • And, your mission doesn’t stop with just the kids. You welcome the staff with our personal health questions and concerns – always with confidentiality and concern. 

 Healthy children learn better.

Julie, you do your thing to ensure that our kids are healthy and you do it with care, kindness and respect for students and staff.  You are truly valued at Irving -  Thank you.

    I really liked this post. Our buildings are full of unsung heroes but none more than our nurses. I look forward to reading more of your posts!

Student Growth

It is hard to believe that we are now into our 3rd year of PERA/Student Growth.  When I think back to the beginning of this initiative, I remember the apprehension around not only the Type III assessments, but the reality that these assessments were going to be linked to teacher evaluation. Now in year 3, PERA seems like second nature.  In the beginning of the year, I held an evaluation meeting for meeting for the staff who would be evaluated this school year and, at that meeting, I suggested that we should focus on formulating meaningful Type III assessments.  I get that it’s easy to pull out last year’s assessment and use it this year, but unless the assessment reflects current classroom instruction, then we are just going through the motions for the sake of compliance. Valentines Day

Carpe diem!  Happy Valentine’s Day!   Kids – and boyfriends and girlfriends– and adults who have special relationships with kids - that would be grandparents, for sure, want to show some expression of their love.   We send our cards with hearts and Xs and Os – and many of us spend a few minutes reading the sentiment inside the card – the thought needs to be a good fit.  Why not take the time to compose our own message to our Valentine?   I have been reading a fair amount about using mentor texts to teach the craft of writing.  Lucy Calkins and Katie Woodray (Wondrous Words) continually advise us to really get to know several good books – like inside and out.  What are the “tricks” of their writing?   What are the craft elements the author weaves into the writing?
